Steve Marty

Stephen Marty graduated from the Victorian College of Pharmacy in 1969. He practised as a community pharmacist in partnerships and as a proprietor for many years before being employed part-time by the Pharmacy Board of Victoria. His initial role was as the first Pharmacy Board Education Officer in Australia, where he developed competency-based assessment for the registration of pharmacists.

He sold his practice in 1992. He was appointed as the Deputy Registrar of the Board and the Deputy Branch Director of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia in Victoria. In 1998 Steve was appointed as Registrar of the Pharmacy Board of Victoria. He is a member of a number of patient safety organisations, pharmaceutical packaging and labelling working parties, the Victorian Nurse Practitioner Advisory Committee, special lecturer in forensic pharmacy at Monash and La Trobe Universities and continues consultation and research into computer use in practice and the minimisation of dispensing errors.

As registrar of the Pharmacy Board of Victoria, Steve has expanded the work the board does with other pharmacy groups. He assists coroners in investigating drug-related deaths and has worked to put systems in place in pharmacies to reduce the number of dispensing errors. He believes that his experiences as a community-based pharmacist have helped him immensely in his role with the board.
