Geoff Sussman

Geoff Sussman graduated from the Victorian College of Pharmacy in 1961. He is a senior lecturer and Chairman of the Wound Education Advisory Committee. He has been involved in wound management for over 30 years in clinical research, product evaluation, teaching and clinical practice. He has published extensively in journals, books and educational tools.

Geoff is interested in tissue repair and wound healing, wound dressings, sports injuries, topical use of antiseptics, wound management practices in pharmacy, medicine and veterinary medicine. His main research areas include wound care and ageing, wound pain, post operative wound and incision management and drugs and healing.

He was the inaugural secretary of the World Union of Wound Healing Societies and is a former president of the Australian Wound Management Association. He is an editorial executive of the International Wound Journal, an editorial board member of Primary Intention and Wound Care Network. He is an Associate of the National Ageing Research Institute and an adviser to the Australian government on wound management issues. He has attended and been invited to speak at many important meetings and conferences and was the Convenor of the 'First World Wound Healing Conference', Melbourne, 2000.

Having been involved in the area of sports medicine for almost 40 years; Geoff is the president of the Victorian Gymnastic Association, was chairman of the Australian Diving Association for ten years, a member of the executive committee of the Victorian Olympic Committee and was a member of the Australian Olympic Team to the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992.

Geoff treats patients at the Austin Hospital, is involved in clinical research and regularly consults patients ranging from elephants and quolls to badgers and limas at Victorian zoos. His wound care technique involves a multidisciplinary approach by everyone involved in patient treatment to ensure that all factors influencing healing are addressed - the underlying cause of the wound, lifestyle, diet, potentially adverse medication, appropriate dressing and maintenance.
