Research Degree Application

Before you apply for a Research degree you will need to:

  • Decide on a research topic and prepare a brief two page research proposal that must be attached to your application.
  • Find and contact two relevant supervisors in one of the areas listed below.

Our areas of stand-out research excellence are:

  • drug delivery and formulation science;
  • drug design and development;
  • neurotransmitter and drug addiction pharmacology; and
  • clinical pharmacy;

Our emerging research strengths are:

  • tissue repair and wound healing;
  • the chemistry of natural products; and
  • skin pharmacology.

You can also visit the websites for each of our sub disciplines, to decide which department you would like to apply to:

  • Medicinal chemistry - is the application of principles and techniques of chemistry to the discovery and development of drugs for the cure, prevention, and treatment of disease. The various phases can be thought of as a feedback cycle of drug design, synthesis and biological testing to optimise the potency and selectivity and to minimise the side effects.
  • Pharmacological research - is involved with elucidating the detailed mechanism of drug action at a functional, biochemical or molecular level. Understanding of the mechanism of action of a drug allows its use in therapeutics to be optimised and often leads to improved treatment of disease states.
  • Pharmaceutics - incorporates the principles of both chemistry and biology in the design of drug formulations and delivery systems for maximum therapeutics benefit. The process requires an understanding of the physical and chemical properties of drug molecules and excipients as well as the physiology and biology of the patient.
  • Pharmacy practice - research is focused on the Quality Use of Medicines - ensuring best health outcomes for patients from their medication. Much of the research takes place where the action is - hospitals, community pharmacies and patients' homes

With your application you will need to supply:

  • Master of Pharmaceutical Science  – Evidence that you have qualified for a Bachelors degree in pharmacy or other relevant field with Honours level of  H1 or HIIA or equivalent from Monash University or other recognised tertiary institution. Masters by Research students may take up to two years to complete on a full-time basis (up to four years part-time).
  • PhD  – Evidence that you have qualified for a research masters degree with a significant research component in the relevant field, or a Bachelors degree in the relevant field with Honours level of H1 or HIIA or equivalent from Monash University or other recognised tertiary institution. PhD students may take up to four years to complete on a full-time basis (up to eight years part time).

Applications and enrolments can occur any time during the year. We conduct Honours programs which have a substantial research component and also serve as excellent preparation for further study and research for graduates who do not hold an Honours degree and wish to progress to a Masters by Research or PhD.

Fees for 100% Research based programs:

  • certified copies of evidence of prior degree completion (specifically research studies);
  • certified copies of academic transcripts;
  • resume or Curriculum Vitae of any relevant work experience;
  • Outline of your proposed research;
  • Evidence of any government support or scholarship.

You will also need to provide certified copies or original evidence of satisfactory language requirements if English is not your first language. The English Language requirements are:

  • Overall Academic IELTS score of 7.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0, or;
  • Overall TOEFL score of 237 with an Essay Rating of 5.
