Pharmaceutical Biology - Research

Research in the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology has a biological focus and includes both fundamental and applied science. Our academic staff are all actively involved in research, with the major focus on the pharmacology of addiction, the gastrointestinal tract, the genitourinary system (in particular the prostate), and pharmaceutical biotechnology.  Collaborative projects are also undertaken with members of other departments and other scientific institutions.

Our research programs include "curiosity-driven" projects as well as more applied projects with potential for commercialisation, and all are designed to provide postgraduate students with training and research methods which are of vital importance to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry.  We offer our students the freedom to pursue their scientific interests and to communicate and publish their results.

A diversity of research projects is available using the techniques of in vivo and in vitro pharmacology, molecular pharmacology, cell culture and molecular biology, biochemistry and physiology.  Any of the projects can be modified to suit an honours, masters or doctoral program.  Potential students are encouraged to contact either the head of department or a project leader to discuss their particular research interests.
