Monash Pharmacy Education Symposium 2009Fitness to practice: competency-based teaching and learning in pharmacy6-8 July, Prato, ItalyAlong with other health disciplines, the pharmacy profession is experiencing the global trend to competency-based assessment of fitness or readiness for practice. To complement this, many academic and professional development organisations are working to develop competency-based teaching and learning strategies and associated resources. What is competency? Who defines competency? How well does pharmacy education address competency standards? What methods are best to develop, maintain and assess competency? Join with your international colleagues in the charming city of Prato to explore the education issues surrounding professional competency in pharmacy. The Symposium provides opportunities to explore how competency has been addressed in different settings. Various approaches to competency will be presented and the future implications of professional definition will be considered.
