Ranelle, 3rd year Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science
I chose Pharmaceutical science - Formulation Chemistry, because it is a one of a kind course involving hands on science. You learn about how to make a product from the raw ingredients right up to the finished result such as cosmetics, paints, food and drugs!
Pharmaceutical Science is specifically tailored to the needs of the industry meaning there are job opportunities jobs both in Australia and overseas. You can choose to work in a variety fields such as technical sales, food, cosmetics, drugs, consumer products and more. When I graduate I plan to work in the cosmetics and perfume industry both in Australia and overseas.
What I most like about the course, are the industry placements. My industry placements so far have been at Orica Woodcare (varnishes), Scental Pacific (perfumes and cosmetics) and Cussons (personal care and consumer products). The placements ensure you have workplace skills before you have even graduated! I have also taken part in the faculty summer scholarship program.
Life at the Victorian College of Pharmacy is not all about learning however, this year I was vice-president of the Pharmaceutical Science Society. The Society holds social, academic and industry events for all Pharmaceutical Science students. These activities include the Annual Pharmaceutical Science dinner where everyone, including students lecturers and industry representatives gets dressed up and party together. Other activities held include bowling, a movie night and free pizza on the last day of university…with even more events to come next year!
The Victoria College of Pharmacy provides a great learning environment within a small community, lots of social activities and a head start to a great career.
