Welcome - Department of Medicinal Chemistry
The Department of Medicinal Chemistry is one of four departments in the faculty of Pharmacy (Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences), at Monash University. It is currently comprised of 12 academics, 5 technical staff, 12 research fellows/assistants and 18 postgraduate students. The Department is responsible for teaching undergraduate units in the Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Formulation Science degrees and also has a central role in the development of teaching the new Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry degree, which commenced at Monash University in 2003.
The Department also has a long history of successful research in pharmaceutical sciences, including a key role in the development of the anti-influenza drug, Relenza™. Current research areas include structural chemistry/biology, computer-aided molecular design and computational chemistry as well as synthesis and characterization of bioactive molecules. Theses research activities are supported by modern facilities including high field NMR spectroscopy, electrospray mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, HPLC and computational chemistry facilities.
