As the first initiative in the recently agreed Monash-Nottingham Research Alliance Program, Charlie Dong, a PhD student in the department of Pharmaceutics, conducted a three week project at the University of Nottingham, UK, utilizing the world leading expertise at Nottingham in Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).

Charlie, who is supervised by Dr Ben Boyd and Dr Ian Larson, is researching the structure and use of liquid crystalline materials as delivery vehicles with potential application in pharmaceutical and agricultural products.

His experiments at the state-of-the-art AFM facility at Nottingham at have yielded important information about how these particles might interact with hydrophobic substrates such as the surface of a leaf or skin/biological membranes, and will lead to the development of strongly adhering particles for improved delivery of drugs, herbicides and pesticides.

The successful visit has also paved the way for future researchers to interact with the Pharmacy School at Nottingham on collaborative projects. On his way to Nottingham, Charlie also conducted a series of small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments on these materials at the Elettra Synchrotron in Trieste, Italy.
