The department has pharmacology and physiology research programmes in addiction, the genitourinary system, and the gastrointestinal tract. The department has several research programmes in pharmaceutical biotechnology, including the use of cell culture models for studies of drugs acting at 5-HT receptors, dopamine receptors and other G protein-coupled receptors, use of stem cells to derive differentiated cells for drug discovery, nucleic acids therapeutics, protein therapeutics and immunotherapy, and fundamental aspects of signal transreduction.

The department provides undergraduate teaching in the areas of pharmacology, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology and toxicology.
