Deferment, Discontinuance, Intermission
All of these are often called "deferments", but here is what they really mean:
-
Deferment: entry to the university is accepted and can then be deferred for a year prior to commencing the degree.
-
Discontinuance: withdrawing from units or from entire course. Students discontinue units or courses for various reasons, at different times of the year, and it may be better to discontinue than fail. Discuss this with your faculty because discontinuing (as distinct from intermitting) can affect your chances of getting back into some faculties in the following year. There are specific dates that apply to discontinuance. Check Principal Dates in the Student Resource Guide before discontinuing. Don’t forget to lodge the appropriate form at your faculty office in time to register your discontinuance and claim a partial or full refund of your fees,
-
Intermission: (formerly known as Leave of Absence): normally a break of up to twelve months during your course. You must apply to your faculty if you wish to return in a later year. Speak to your faculty adviser. International students will only be approved intermission for exceptional circumstances and must contact the faculty and the International Student Advisor.
-
Intermissions (higher degree): normally a break of up to twelve months during your course/candidature. Students undertaking masters by research, consult your faculty. IMPORTANT: there are regulations governing time limits, intermissions and extensions. Check with your faculty administrator before making the final decision. If money is the problem, see the FINANCIAL AID entry, before making your final decision. International students will only be approved intermission for exceptional circumstances and must contact the faculty and the International Student Advisor.
