Assessment policy

Each unit contains a number of assessment components. These assessment tasks are designed to assist with the learning process. It is expected that students attempt all assessment tasks.

1. Some components are deemed to be essential competencies and must be completed to a satisfactory level. Examples of essential components include, but are not limited to, oral examinations, calculations, oral presentations and practical examinations. Essential components are identified in unit outlines.

2. Essential components

2a. For any essential component not completed or not reaching a minimum standard the candidate may be permitted to resubmit and have the component assessed prior to the meeting of the Board of Examiners.

2b. Successful completion of an essential component of a unit in the second attempt will result in a maximum score of 50% of the value of the component contributing to the unit’s total assessment.

2c. Unsatisfactory completion or failure of an essential component in the unit in the second attempt will result in the candidate failing the unit.

3. If a candidate scores a total mark for a unit between 45 and 49%, the candidate may be eligible for a ‘near pass’, subject to the rules of ‘near passes’ as decreed by the Education Committee.

4. Components of a unit that the unit examiner can be assured reflect the individual student’s own work should contribute no less than 60% of the unit’s total assessment. Examples of such work may include written examination, practical and oral assessments.

5a. To pass the unit, a mark of no less than 40% for the written examination must be attained, even if the total score for the unit is above 50%.

5b. To pass the unit, a total score of no less than 40% for the aggregate of the not written examination components must be attained, even if the total unit score is above 50%.
